Winter Holidays in France

Winter Holidays in France

Although the summer period is the main rental period in the Poitou-Charentes, there are more and more visitors staying in our Gites for winter holidays in France.

Some come to look for French properties to buy and prefer to stay in comfortable self-catering accommodation rather than hotels. If you wish, we can help you with advice on good estate agents, renovation work, translation etc.

Others come out of season to have a holiday walking, cycling, sampling the good food on offer and visiting the many well known Romanesque churches and interesting towns such as La Rochelle, Cognac, Angouleme, Poitiers and Saintes. Traditionally autumn is a beautiful season in the Poitou-Charentes with warm sunny days, cooler evenings and the countryside seems to glow with the most stunning colours. In winter there is more sunshine than in many other areas; the days can be cold but normally bright. Often one wakes to a frosty morning but within a short space of time the sun has melted the frost and you would be amazed how much warmth there is in the sun even in mid winter.

If you want to escape from the over commercialised frenzy of Christmas, a winter holiday in France, in a traditional farmhouse with plenty of space is the perfect antidote. Several of the properties on the website, which are marked as being suitable for winter rentals, are centrally heated and perfect for Christmas/NewYear with family or friends. There is nothing better than spending Christmas in an old timbered farmhouse with a roaring log fire and a glass of well matured Bordeaux or Cognac.

If family commitments make it impossible to spend Christmas here, why not come down and spend a week doing your Christmas shopping. You will find it a truly pleasurable experience wandering round the uncrowded shops where everyone has time to serve you with a smile and will even insist on wrapping your presents up beautifully for you. It is refreshing to be able to shop in small, specialised boutiques rather than impersonal superstores. The pleasure of giving is so much greater in the knowledge that you have found the perfect gift here which you would not have been able to find at home.

Another advantage of winter rentals is that the rental price for the properties is considerably lower, as are ferry and air fares, and you can spend two or three weeks away for the same price you would pay for a single week in high season.
