SOUTH WEST FRANCE

South West France is not a region in itself, rather a loosely defined area. There is some debate exactly what constitutes south west France. The official regions of Aquitaine and Midi Pyrenees are undoubtedly members but nowadays, to many, Poitou-Charentes also qualifies for membership. Its climate links it more closely with the south west than with the centre or west.

Traveling from the north, once the Loire is crossed, there is an undoubted softening of the temperature, the rainfall diminishes and the temperature climbs. It is a very popular area with tourists due to its excellent climate, interesting food and wide range of scenery. The increase in the number of flights from such airlines as Ryanair, Flybe and Easyjet has opened up many new airports to international flights such as Poitiers, Limoges, Bergerac, Pau and Rochefort. The rail links are very good and improving; TGV trains run from Paris to La Rochelle, Poitiers, Angouleme and Bordeaux and then on to Tarbes, Pau and Irun . A brand new line is due to be built from Tours to Bordeaux which will take half an hour off the journey time from Paris to Bordeaux. The motorway network serves the area very well and tourists can reach Poitiers from Calais in under six hours.

The most northerly capital is Poitiers, (Poitou-Charentes), then south to Bordeaux (Aquitaine) and finally Toulouse (Midi Pyrenees).
